The promotional format “Ladenburg Research Clusters” comprises research projects that are subsidized for a period of three to five years; the findings from this research are then published. Under the management of a scientist appointed by the Foundation, the research activities are carried out by several working groups at various scientific facilities in Germany and abroad over an extended period. The members of a Research Cluster have a great deal of freedom in their work, autonomously determine their own research programs, and convene in regular meetings at the Foundation. The Daimler and Benz Foundation normally subsidizes positions for the support of young employees, and covers travel and to a limited extent material costs.

There is no formal application process for the “Ladenburg Research Clusters” format. Scientists can approach the Foundation management with suggestions for a Research Cluster at any time. In a personal discussion, it is clarified whether a topic is suitable for the Foundation’s promotional program.
