Dr.-Ing. Renate Sachse has been awarded the 2022 Bertha Benz Prize for her dissertation entitled “Variational Motion Design for Adaptive Structures”. She has developed an innovative mathematical method that can be applied in civil engineering, aerospace, robotics and medical engineering: The findings from her dissertation – which she prepared at the University of Stuttgart’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering – can be used to easily calculate movements of mutable structures that enhance energy efficiency and sustainability.
