The Daimler and Benz Foundation has awarded its Bertha Benz Prize 2020 to Dr.-Ing. Katrin Philipp for her thesis on the “Investigation of aberration correction and axial scanning in microscopy employing adaptive lenses.” The prize-winning research paper was submitted to the Dresden University of Technology’s Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The engineer succeeded in developing a digital laser microscope that opens up entirely new opportunities for diagnosis, particularly in the examination of deep tissue layers – e.g. in case of changes in the thyroid gland. With its use of an adaptive lens developed in cooperation with the Laboratory for Microactuators at IMTEK of the University of Freiburg, the microscope developed and built by Philipp represents a paradigm shift in biomedicine.
