The “Great Game” in Africa: Geopolitics and media Intervention post-2022

Geopolitical shifts are currently taking place in Africa as the result of political and economic influence on the part of Russia and China, as well as Turkey and the Gulf monarchies. This particularly impacts the media.

In this project, which is supported by the Foundation and is headed by Prof. Dr. Susanne Fengler from the Erich Brost Institute for International Journalism at the Technical University of Dortmund, work will be carried out together with scientific colleagues from Uganda, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria and Tanzania in order to examine how external influences affect the various media landscapes. The objective is to initiate intra-African debate on democratic standards such as freedom of the press and of expression, and to devise specific recommendations for action in the different regions of influence.

At the same time, a more pronounced and, above all, more differentiated awareness of the problems associated with geopolitical influence is to be created at a national and international level.
