Ladenburg Research Networks "TITAN"

The TITAN research consortium of the Ladenburger Research Networks funding line is concerned with the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in the judicial system. Research is being carried out into the challenges and conditions involved in support from adaptive language systems, with particular focus on their acceptance. The researchers are bringing together perspectives on jurisprudence, occupational and organizational psychology, legal informatics, and economics.

The meeting focused on reports on the various work packages. A survey for publication was also drawn up on the analysis of acceptability conditions, taking into consideration the different jurisdictions. The program was supplemented by impulses on the current state of development in this area of research from Prof. Dr. Matthias Grabmair, who presented his exploratory work in the field of quality criteria related to information technology. Prof. Dr. Phillip Reuß then presented findings from his project “Artificial intelligence and judicial decision-making.”

Insights into the use of AI in the USA were given by Prof. Dr. Daniel E. Ho, who shed light on the legal challenges resulting from this – especially as the U.S. legal system functions in an entirely different way to that of Germany. But since AI systems are often trained on the basis of global data sources, U.S. law is also influenced by other legal systems. Particularly this aspect of AI-based applications is at the focus of critical debate in the USA.
