The Foundation mourns the passing of Dr. Diethard Schade

Dr. Diethard Schade, born on June 19, 1936 in Korbach, died on April 28, 2024 in Berlin. The employees of the Daimler and Benz Foundation mourn the loss of their former Chairman, a person who stood for continuity, stability, and cooperation.

The physicist Diethard Schade was appointed to the Executive Board of the newly established non-profit “Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz Foundation” in 1986. He continued to work in this capacity with his calm, circumspect demeanor until 2008. His interactions with people were marked by attentive listening, with a particular focus on his discussion partners.

In addition to his position as the Foundation’s Chairman, Diethard Schade was Head of the “Technology and Society” research department at the then Daimler-Benz AG. In this capacity, he constantly ensured a fruitful exchange with the parent company of the Foundation. He subsequently headed the “Technology, Functionality, Quality of Life” department at the Academy of Technology Impact Assessment of the State of Baden-Württemberg and was spokesman for the Academy’s Executive Board.

Taking an interdisciplinary view of science and technology and their impact on people and society was always at the core of his interests – an ideal match for the Foundation’s funding objectives. He showed commitment and openness in his cooperation with academics from other disciplines and initiated a considerable number of future-oriented funding projects.

Diethard Schade maintained his close ties to the Daimler and Benz Foundation until the end. We look back fondly on our time with him and cherish our memories of his personality.
