Language level diagnosis app for children with a migration background

The members’ meeting of the association “Verein zur Förderung von Verfahren zur Sprachstandserhebung und Sprachförderung e. V.” on July 28 and 29, 2025 focused on the further development of the WUSCHEL diagnostic app and, on this basis, the planning of language support measures. The objective was to enable intensive exchange and to foster close networking of experts in order to coordinate the next steps. The association and the app emerged from the “Ladenburg Research Networks” funding line, which made around 1.4 million euros available to support the development of a valid, reliable, and objective method for determining the language level of children with a migration background.

The expert meeting focused on issues relating to the practical and technical implementation of the procedure. An important function is the automatic transcription of the pre-school children’s language responses; this will enable the results of the language tests to be downloaded in future with a simple mouse click. As a supplement, a digital onboarding tool is being developed which includes information materials, readily understandable step-by-step instructions, open consultation hours, and online training courses on this basis. The aim is to make familiarization with the app easier, to support its use in everyday pedagogical practice, and to provide professionals with targeted training.

About the association
The association “Verein zur Förderung von Verfahren zur Sprachstandserhebung und Sprachförderung e. V.,” founded in late 2023, emerged from the interdisciplinary Ladenburg Research Network “Determining the language skills of children with a migrant background” funded by the Daimler and Benz Foundation. For more than ten years, this research consortium focused on the early identification of language difficulties among pre-school children at the transition stage from nursery to primary school. The Foundation thereby contributed to the further development of a digital, evidence-based, and practicable language diagnosis and language support procedure for the prevention of structural disadvantages in Germany. Evidence-based, practically applicable procedures will enable educational institutions to make precise diagnoses and implement effective support initiatives.
