The scientists in the “KonCheck” Research Network – AI-based methods for supporting opinion-forming and participation – are developing innovative tools to help vulnerable groups find their way around the information jungle of the Internet. Specifically, these tools support first-time voters, senior citizens, and people with cognitive impairments in forming political opinions. The consortium is bringing together experts from the fields of human-computer interaction, Internet security, AI research, communication science, and social research.

On September 10 and 11, 2025, the partners from the interdisciplinary KonCheck Research Network convened on the premises of the Daimler and Benz Foundation in Ladenburg for a scientific exchange and ongoing strategic planning. The project, which was launched in August 2024, is being funded with a total of 1.5 million euros over a period of three years.

The partners presented their results achieved to date along with current developments: from AI-supported analysis of news articles by means of browser extensions and mobile apps, analytical communication frameworks and qualitative user studies, to the recognition of AI-generated content. The meeting focused above all on the holistic approach adopted within the project, which combines the correction and classification of false information (debunking) with preventive measures (prebunking) and proactive, integrated interactions.

A project advisory board appointed by the research consortium enriched the discussions with valuable perspectives gained from practical experience. Together with the project participants, they discussed the dynamic challenges of the political information landscape. These include current political developments, the opportunities and risks of generative AI, and the needs and special characteristics of the vulnerable groups. The researchers intend to continue refining the technical tools and to assess their effectiveness in longitudinal studies.
