Call for applications for a new joint project: “The role and significance of experiential knowledge in the age of artificial intelligence”

In times of demographic change, technological progress, skills shortages, and economic uncertainty, experiential knowledge can prove essential for survival. An interdisciplinary joint project is to explore how this valuable knowledge can be identified and passed on.

The Daimler and Benz Foundation is funding the topic “The role and significance of experiential knowledge in the age of artificial intelligence” as part of its Ladenburg Research Networks funding line and is making a sum of up to €1.5 million available for a research consortium with a maximum duration of three years. Eligible to apply are independent research group leaders – professors, junior professors, or “Habilitanden” (candidates for lecturing positions) – at universities or not-for-profit non-university research institutes in Germany.

While technical expertise is documented in text books, instruction manuals, and protocols, valuable personal experiential knowledge often remains tacitly linked to individual minds. When an experienced specialist leaves a company or goes into retirement, that person’s wealth of knowledge is in danger of being lost. However, experiential knowledge plays a key role not only in companies, but in many areas of society – especially where decisions must be made in conditions of uncertainty, time pressure, or in complex situations.

Artificial intelligence and modern information technologies are opening up new avenues here: Knowledge management platforms, digital twins, and intelligent assistance systems can help in the recording and structuring of experiential knowledge and in making it available. However, it is crucial that these technologies be linked to the human perspective, for instance by means of interactive interviews, experience reports in the form of videos, or immersive learning environments. This is the only way to preserve experiential knowledge in a lively and accessible form.
