The Foundation mourns the passing of Prof. Dr. e. h. Werner Breitschwerdt
Prof. Dr. e. h. Werner Breitschwerdt, born in Stuttgart on September 23, 1927, passed away in Stuttgart on December 20, 2021. The employees of the Daimler and Benz Foundation mourn the loss of a remarkable personality.
As Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler-Benz AG, Werner Breitschwerdt established the non-profit “Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz Foundation” 35 years ago – it came into being on November 10, 1986. He subsequently left his mark on the work of the Foundation as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. He was appointed its honorary Chairman in 2010.
Werner Breitschwerdt was passionate about research into the interactions between people, the environment and technology. On the occasion of the Foundation’s establishment, he spoke of a spiritual task and a deeply felt obligation of the founding company towards the common good. People, he said, were always the focal point and measure of all technical developments.
With his foresight and commitment, he thus laid the basis for the promotion of numerous forward-looking research projects and accompanying publications. Werner Breitschwerdt always had interdisciplinary research, the promotion of up-and-coming young academics, and open communication with the public in mind. It was very important to him that the Foundation should be able to act autonomously and freely. All this is still valid today and is anchored as its purpose in the Foundation’s Statutes.
We will continue to develop the Daimler and Benz Foundation in this spirit, and uphold and honor the memory of Werner Breitschwerdt and his work.
