Safety of Technology (1987 - 1994)

Chair: Professor Dr. K.-H. Lindackers, at the time: TÜV Rheinland, Cologne

Overview:

Topic of the Collogium

When the collegium was planned, it became quickly clear that the aspiration to treat a complex topic like "Safety of Technology" in an exhaustive fashion in the limited time frame of the collegium was not realistic. Therefore, it was planned to first explore the questions on the basis of certain selected central issues and to select specific topics which would be used for in depth analysis.

Starting from the topic "The Safety of Complex Technical Systems" , the focus of the collegium moved to the question of "Security in Information Technology and Communication Systems" , an area in which profound deficits were recognized. "Risks and Acceptance of Technology" developed into another self-contained area in need of special discussion.

Two aspects were in the center of the considerations: man as the operator of complex technical systems, i.e. concerning any job relevant impact, and the safety relevant design of user interfaces and lastly man as a potential victim of any adverse affects incurred because of insufficient safety measures.

Participants were experts of the natural sciences and engineers, mathematicians, computer scientists, experts in the humanities and legal experts. They represented universities, research institutes, professional associations, and the technical supervision.

The collegium "Security in Communication Technology" had its roots in the discussion on Information and Communication Systems.
