Ladenburg Collegium "Security in Communication Technology"

Chair: Professor Günter Müller, University of Freiburg, Institute for Information Technology and Society

Overview:

Topic of the Collegium

The Ladenburg Collegium "Security in Communication Technology" was held between 1994 and 1999. Psychologists analyzed the user perception of security. Legal experts, social scientists and political scientists took a closer look at the social and political conditions facilitating the general acceptance of the new media. In close cooperation with all the participants of the collegium, computer scientists developed new technologies or network architectures for secure communication. The concept of "Multilateral Security" was the basis of the research, which delegates the responsibility for security to the parties involved (providers, network operators and users).

In a simulation study in November 1998, participants of the collegium together with the research hospital of the University of Heidelberg tested the technologies developed in the collegium with the requirement of the privacy of patient data. The results of the collegium are available in three publications. In July 1999, the participants of the collegium presented the results to an expert public at an academic conference.

The Web-Site of the collegium is available at http://www.iig.uni-freiburg.de/dbskolleg.
